Establishing a safe learning environment is one of the first things that encourages student engagement. Adult learners need to feel they are in a place where they will be respected, heard and supported. Developing a set of group agreements or group guidelines is an interactive process that set some ground rules for classroom safety.
The two examples of group guidelines below were developed by a facilitator led process for an employability program. The participants contributed the content.
The guidelines reflect the values, needs and personality of each group. Both examples contain the important rules of what constitutes a safe learning environment. Spelling, neatness and layout do not matter.
It is important not to evaluate or correct the contributions. Post them where they can be seen so they are a reminder to the group of their guiding principles when together.
